Some celebrities just love to invest. They have lots of money, they have lots of people advising them on what to do with that money, and they have lots of entrepreneurs who understand all too well the kind of positive publicity that can be attained by the mere fact of inviting celebrity investors into their business. While most celebrities will invest a little bit here and there, half-heartedly building up an investment portfolio, some become practically addicted to it, seemingly spending more time investing in start-ups and the stock market than they do actually acting, singing, or taking part in inane reality TV shows. We follow the most passionate serial celebrity investors and track their progress as they try to build up an investment portfolio and navigate a world more treacherous than Hollywood… there are no part-timers on this list, just the serious players.

He started off his own private equity investment company, called A Grade Investments, along with billionaire investor Ron Burkle, and has since pumped his money into over 40 different ventures, most of them in the fickle but potentially highly profitable tech industry – given that Silicon Valley and Hollywood are located in the same state, perhaps this should come as no surprise. He invested in Skype a couple of years before their huge selloff to Microsoft, and has since invested in many different companies while forever keeping an eye out for new investment opportunities.

Bono

Bono, the loveable/annoying breathless singer of mega-band U2 and promoter of goodwill and charity who simply cannot stop diving headlong into a thousand and one different good causes, is also the founder and co-owner of Elevation Partners, a private equity company which has almost $2 billion in assets, making him one of the most successful celebrity investors out there. They are always on the lookout for new investment opportunities and have invested mainly in the technology and new media sectors, with their highest and most prominent investment coming in 2010 when they bought $120 million worth of Facebook stock (in addition to the $90 million they had pumped in before), acquiring 1.5% of the company; two years later, after Facebook’s IPO in 2012, the company sold just over 10% of its shares and Bono personally netted almost $10 million. On the flip side, Forbes flopped and had to be rescued by an Asian firm, and Palm was similarly bought out by Hewlett-Packard. Still, not a bad investment portfolio.

Jared Leto doesn’t look like much of a businessman, more of a down-and-out wondering hippy in search of josh sticks and free love, yet the method actor, singer/songwriter and director is one if the main boys in the circle of serious celebrity investors. He found fame with his role in the TV series, My So Called Life, he then resumed singing duties with the successful 30 Seconds To Mars band, before then returning back to acting in a whole bunch of films, most notable of which was Dallas Buyers Club, where his performance as a transgender woman won him an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. He’s a very busy man; he sings, he acts, he directs music videos, but he still can’t stop investing, and he therefore boasts a pretty fat investment portfolio.

That’s one of the things that I thought a lot about as a young kid — the guys behind the scenes who make things happen, help build people up, make dreams come true”. He’s since invested in dozens of start-ups, including Bitcoin services provider Coinbase, building up a pretty impressive investment portfolio.
